ECUADOR'S COMMITMENT

To The Paris Agreement And Net Zero 2050...

Ecuador has been strengthening its sustainability and energy goals to align with the Paris Agreement’s climate objectives, which aim to limit global warming well below 2 °C and pursue efforts to stay below 1.5 °C. Ecuador ratified the Paris Agreement in 2017 and has since updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to include economy-wide commitments to cut greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience to climate change, including maintaining a high share of renewable energy and boosting energy efficiency across sectors.

In the energy sector, Ecuador commits to keeping over 80 % of its electricity generation from renewable sources and expanding its renewable capacity, especially by diversifying beyond hydropower into solar, wind, biomass, and emerging technologies like green hydrogen — with strategic targets for renewable energy and hydrogen capacity through 2050. These actions are part of a broader national strategy to decarbonize, modernize the energy matrix, improve energy security, and attract investment in clean energy infrastructure.

By linking renewable energy expansion, emissions mitigation, and sustainable development planning, Ecuador’s energy goals support its Paris Agreement commitments and its broader sustainability agenda — including adherence to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (like climate action and affordable clean energy) as central policy priorities.
